Following the 2015 earthquake, we have also been donating to individual schools in Nepal since 2016. This year, in collaboration with the „Menschen im Dialog“ association, we are supporting the Shree Ichchhya Basic School in the mountain village of Hulchuk. The donation will be used to finance school uniforms. The teachers are already actively promoting the school and hope that providing school uniforms will motivate parents and children to attend school.
In October, the students of Shree Ichchha Basic School were given school uniforms.
Ralf Ledl from „Menschen im Dialog e.V.“ is currently in the mountain village of Hulchuk with volunteers and other helpers. He wrote the following:
„A visionary project: Clothing for education – in Hulchuk, Nepal
With its generous support, Darjeelinghilfe Dortmund e.V. has made an important contribution to a special educational project in the remote mountain village of Hulchuk in Nepal. Over 200 school uniforms, 230 pairs of shoes, underwear, and warm winter hats were provided for the children of Shree Ichha Basic School – and transported to the village in three jeeps over steep slopes and through roaring waterfalls.
But despite all the joy about the new clothing, distributing donations in kind is not simply an end in itself for our partner organization, Menschen im Dialog e.V. Rather, the question of sustainability always arises with such campaigns. Therefore, the provision of clothing was tied to a clear condition:
The school’s teachers have committed to visiting the surrounding villages and actively seeking out children who, for various reasons, are currently out of school. The goal is to motivate these children to attend school and provide them with access to education.
Thus, a simple clothing donation becomes a powerful impetus for greater educational equity – and the new clothing becomes a symbol of participation and a bright future.
At the same time, the project team – consisting of four volunteers from the POS Service Group, the skilled tradesman Elias, and Ralf from Menschen im Dialog e.V. – is working hard to repair and expand the school toilets. They are actively supported by the local guides Phurbu, Zering, and Ridam from MRDS Nepal.
The team has more than two busy weeks ahead of them, but their motivation is high – and their joy at what they have achieved so far is just as great.
We would like to sincerely thank Darjeelinghilfe Dortmund e.V. for their support – and for their trust in a project whose impact extends beyond the current moment.“
